The fatal attraction

In a new paper in Conservation Letters, a groups of scientists working on the design, implementation and critical assessment of Payments for Ecosystem Services, have warned against the possible risks of such conservation tools. The risks are somewhat similar to those faced by Integrated Conservation and Development Projects, and include among others the need to pay attention to institutional design principles (and the latter’s effect on outcomes) and to possible negative effects on local conservation ethics and behaviour.
